Lisa Rinna is not known for holding back, and her latest TikTok proves it. On Tuesday, July 7, a former star of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills claimed, with no proof, that Senator Mitch McConnell has died.
“I mean, come on, Mitch McConnell’s dead,” Rinna, 62, said. “He’s dead.”
She went further, comparing his weeks-long absence from public view to a 1989 dark comedy. “They’re keeping him alive like Weekend at Bernie’s,” she claimed, shaking her head at the camera.
Weekend at Bernie’s shows two employees who dress their dead boss in sunglasses. They take him to parties to hide that he’s gone.
To Be Clear: His Office Says He Is Alive
Before going any further, the actual facts. McConnell’s office spoke to Us Weekly the same day Rinna posted. They directly addressed the rumors.
“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” the statement read. “The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
CNN analyst Scott Jennings tweeted that he recently spoke with McConnell. They talked for nearly 20 minutes about Iran, Ukraine, and Senate history. “I told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible,” Jennings wrote.
So Rinna’s declaration is a joke built on a rumor, not a report. It’s odd that a former Housewives star can post a 15-second video about a senator and trigger real news coverage. This shows just how strange this story has become.
Why The Rumors Started In The First Place
The speculation did not come from nowhere. McConnell, 84, has had a rough stretch of health scares this year.
In February, he was hospitalized with flu-like symptoms. His team called it a precaution taken out of an abundance of caution. The more serious incident came later. On July 1, multiple outlets reported that McConnell had been found unconscious at his Washington, D.C. home on June 14. The New York Post reported that emergency dispatch audio mentioned CPR for a cardiac arrest at the house.
Senate records show McConnell has not voted since June 11. His spokesperson, Stephanie Penn, told People earlier this month that he is still working with staff on Senate matters. However, “he will not be voting this week.”
Weeks without showing up in public, a reported heart attack, and vague staff statements created a perfect space for rumors to grow. Rinna’s TikTok is just the most famous face to jump into it.
She’s Not The Only One Fueling The Fire
Right-wing activist Laura Loomer took it a step further than Rinna. She claimed on X that McConnell is “brain dead and hooked up to machines.” His office’s statement the same day cast doubt on that claim, and nothing has substantiated it.
Meghan McCain took a different angle, demanding transparency rather than spreading theories. “Senator McConnell’s staff owes it to the American public to give a real update on his health or show us some kind of proof of life,” she wrote on X. “All of this is unseemly, macabre, bad for democracy and quite frankly embarrassing for the country.”
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has asked McConnell’s team for updates on his condition.
McCain’s point lands regardless of where you stand politically. When official updates are vague for weeks, celebrities and activists step in. The public then has to sift through facts and TikTok jokes.
Where Things Stand
McConnell has been Kentucky’s Senate representative since 1985. He is now in his seventh term. He announced in 2025 that he will not seek reelection in 2026.
Right now, here’s the update: McConnell is in the hospital, recovering, and staying in touch with his staff, his office says. Rinna’s video is still online, and the rumors continue. Until McConnell makes a public appearance, the Weekend at Bernie’s jokes will likely stick around.
