Van Patten said she was blindsided by how heavy the story in Tell Me Lies would get.
“I only read the pilot when I first read it,” she explained. “I thought I was, like, signing up to be, like, a preppy, closed off, going to college, maybe gonna reinvent herself, meets a guy.”
She played Lucy in a story that many viewers say shows the chaos of toxic relationships.
“It’s such an accurate portrayal of what a toxic relationship is,” Van Patten admitted.
Lucy’s Most Cringe Moment
When asked by Cooper about the character’s most awkward storyline, Van Patten didn’t hesitate.
“I think anytime Lucy thinks she’s being subtle about something,” she laughed. “The underwear moment in season two. Oh, my God. Of course. Of course. I was like, no.”
Fans online called season two “diabolically perfect” and begged for season three.
A Love That Started on Zoom
Beyond her character’s drama, Van Patten opened up about her real-life romance with Jackson.
“I didn’t like Jackson, so I was just like, God, who makes the first move?” she recalled. “We sat on a stoop for, I think, six hours and talked about every reason why we should act on this, and then I kissed him.”
Cooper, who met her own husband on Zoom, laughed at the parallels.
