A major chapter has officially ended.
In a PEOPLE sneak peek of the Jan. 4 episode of Sister Wives, Janelle Brown, 56, shares that she has received a spiritual divorce from Kody Brown.
The Apostolic United Brethren church approved her release.
And Janelle did not hide her relief.
“I have it,” she says while holding the paperwork.
“That was easy. I thought I was going to have to come back for a second meeting.”
Then she repeats the words fans waited years to hear.
“I am free. I am free. I am free. I am free.”
“I Felt Like a Weight Had Lifted”
Janelle met with church leaders. She was surprised by how emotional it felt.
“I don’t know what I was worried about,” she says.
“They were all very kind.”
She explains that something shifted inside her.
“There was really kind of a shift in my energy,” Janelle admits.
“This must have meant something deep down that I wasn’t always paying attention to.”
As she walked away, the feeling only grew stronger.
“I just kind of felt free,” she says.
“I felt like a weight had lifted off me.”
Church Leaders Will Inform Kody
Janelle confirms she will not be the one to break the news.
The church told her they would handle calling Kody directly and informing him of the decision.
For Janelle, that closed the loop.
Quietly.
Cleanly.
Finally.

No Regrets After Nearly 30 Years
Janelle and Kody were spiritually married for 29 years before splitting in 2022.
They share six children together: Logan, Madison, Hunter, Gabriel, Savanah, and late son Garrison.
Looking back, Janelle remains at peace.
“I was married to him longer than I was single,” she says.
“I don’t regret anything in the last 30 years.”
She makes one thing clear.
“I love the family that we have,” Janelle says.
“I would do it all again to get the kids we have.”
But she also accepts reality.
“That chapter has ended.”
Meri Brown’s Decision Sparked the Idea
Janelle says she never thought about a spiritual divorce until Meri Brown did it first.
“I had never really thought about it,” Janelle previously said.
“I’m not really part of that church anymore.”
But Meri’s experience changed her perspective.
“If I were to remarry, maybe it’s worth getting a spiritual divorce,” Janelle explained.
Now she knows she made the right call.

Where This Leaves Kody
Kody’s plural marriage life has officially collapsed.
He split from Christine Brown Woolley in 2021.
Meri followed in 2023.
Now Janelle is spiritually free.
His only remaining marriage is with Robyn Brown.
That reality is impossible to ignore.
