Mykelti Brown talks about a tough time from her childhood. She says it changed how she sees trust and family.
On a recent episode of the Cults to Consciousness podcast, the Sister Wives star shared her experiences growing up in a polygamous home. She talked about a strict family rule that deeply affected her life.
The reality star shared that they grew up in a place where kids often looked after each other. She shared that she had a traumatic experience as a child. However, she felt discouraged after getting in trouble for speaking up. The talk gave one of the most personal and emotional insights Mykelti has ever shared.
Sister Wives: “The Kids Are Raising the Kids”
Mykelti talked about taking on responsibilities early. Most kids her age were still learning to care for themselves. “The kids are raising the kids, essentially.”
She remembered changing diapers at just four years old. She also helped care for her younger siblings during her childhood. By six or seven, she often carried younger kids and helped with family tasks. Mykelti said that parentification was a major challenge for her while growing up in a big polygamous family.
Sister Wives: A Family Rule That Left a Lasting Mark
A key emotional moment in the interview was when Mykelti talked about her family’s strict rule against “tattle-telling.” She said the rule made people afraid to speak up about serious issues.
“I think it created a lot of issues with us kids not telling our parents the truth.” Mykelti said kids often worry about getting in trouble if they report issues. She thought about how hard it would be for a child to speak up about inappropriate behavior. They might fear punishment. The reality star revealed that this dynamic had a profound effect on her growing up.

Sister Wives: “There Is an Experience That Happened to Me”
Mykelti shared that she went through a traumatic event in her childhood. However, she stopped short of sharing specific details. “There is an experience that happened to me.”
She told her parents what happened. Instead of support, she felt punished. “I’m not quite emotionally healed enough and ready to talk about it.” That experience became a turning point. Mykelti said it made her less willing to share personal struggles with her parents in the future. As a mother herself today, she said she wants her own children to feel safe bringing any concern to her.
Sister Wives: Why Robyn Brown Became Someone She Trusted
Mykelti surprisingly credited Robyn Brown for helping her find her voice as a teen. Robyn joined the Brown family when Mykelti was around 13 years old. “Actually, the first person I really started to talk to was my dad’s fourth wife, Robyn.”
Mykelti said Robyn made a place for her to be honest. She didn’t have to fear punishment. That feeling of safety strengthened their relationship. “I talked to her about things that happened to me and I didn’t get in trouble.” For Mykelti, that difference mattered.
Sister Wives: Robyn Allegedly Stepped In
According to Mykelti, Robyn did more than listen. She claimed Robyn challenged how adults in the family handled certain situations. Mykelti recalled Robyn speaking directly to Kody Brown and advocating for her.
“This is not OK. You guys handled this wrong. She needs help.” Those moments left a lasting impression. Mykelti said Robyn’s support made her feel safe. During a time when she felt vulnerable and ignored, it really helped.
