RHUGT: Kyle Richards Broke Down Over A Text From Mauricio On Their 30th Anniversary

Kyle Richards didn’t expect January 20 to hit her the way it did. In a preview clip for the August 16 episode of Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Roaring 20th, the 56-year-old broke down in tears in front of castmate Vicki Gunvalson while opening up about what would have been her 30th wedding anniversary with estranged husband Mauricio Umansky.

“I’m just having a moment,” Richards said, visibly emotional. “Today’s my 30-year anniversary. It makes me sad.”

The Text That Undid Her

What triggered the tears wasn’t just the date on the calendar. It was a message from Umansky himself.

“He sent me a text and it just sent me off,” Richards said. “He said today’s always such a hard day and I love you. He said I don’t know how we got here.”

That kind of message, tender but final, tends to hurt more than silence would. Richards admitted the moment shook something she thought was settled. “I thought we were stronger than that. I really had thought that.”

The couple announced their separation three years ago, and this moment suggests that distance in time hasn’t fully dulled the loss for either of them.

Vicki’s Sympathy, Then Her Judgment

Vicki Gunvalson, who split from her own ex-husband Donn Gunvalson back in 2010, opened with genuine compassion. “My heart is breaking for Kyle,” she said in a confessional, “because they’ve got everything everyone is looking for and 30 years of marriage, all of a sudden it’s dissolving.”

That warmth didn’t last through the actual conversation. When Richards described feeling ashamed, Vicki agreed rather than reassured her. “You should be,” she said. “You let your family down. You let your kids down. You’re showing them it’s okay to bail out when things get tough. It’s not okay.”

She kept going. “For me, you guys were the epitome of staying together forever. You’re supposed to grow old together, you’re supposed to do life together, have grandkids.”

It’s worth pausing on that response. A friend crying over an anniversary text is not usually the moment for a lecture about letting your family down, and framing a 30-year marriage’s end as someone simply “bailing” ignores how little anyone outside a relationship actually knows about why it ended. Vicki’s own divorce presumably taught her that marriages fail for complicated reasons that rarely fit into a tidy verdict. Whether that tough-love instinct came from a real place of care or from projecting her own history onto Kyle’s, it landed at a moment when Kyle seemed to need comfort more than judgment.

The Hardest Part, According To Kyle

Richards also opened up about which part of the public fallout has actually hurt the most, and it wasn’t the breakup itself.

“The thing that bothered me the most, honestly, was people saying that we gave them hope that true love existed,” she said. “And now, that went out the window for them. But I understand people thinking like that.”

That is a particular kind of grief unique to a public marriage. Richards isn’t just processing her own loss. She’s absorbing the disappointment of strangers who had projected their own hope onto her relationship, and she’s doing it with more grace than the moment probably deserves.

Where Things Actually Stand

Umansky has been linked to several women since the separation, including models Klaudia K and Nikita Kahn, both in their mid-30s. He addressed his dating life in a November interview with People, sharing the advice his daughters have given him. “The biggest advice that they give from their perspective is: ‘Dad, we want you to be happy. We want you to enjoy yourself, but be age-appropriate,’” he said.

Richards and Umansky have shared moments together since their split, despite the distance and dating headlines. The two met again at their daughter Portia’s high school graduation in June. This showed that even after a marriage ends, there can still be real care between those who built a family together.
