Meri Brown is finally sharing a story she kept quiet for decades. In a rare moment on Sister Wives, Meri reflected on her early relationship with Janelle Brown. She shared the complicated emotions that came with it.
“Janelle and I knew each other before Kody and I did,” Meri revealed. “She had married my brother, and they were married for about a year and a half. And then fast forward, when she ended up coming into our family, there were so many emotions surrounding that.”
Meri admitted it was difficult navigating her feelings as the first plural wife. “There was just a lot. I always felt like when Janelle got married, she was being really cool in the way that she was including me,” she said.
“She didn’t want to hurt my feelings. Because this is like, the first plural wife, and there was a lot of emotions. You know, I had a lot of emotions. We all did. We were all trying to figure out how to do this plural marriage thing,” she added.
What she said next surprised fans: “That always made me feel very special that she did that. And honestly, I’m not sure if I ever told her that. I don’t know if she even knows that.”
Sister Wives: A Bittersweet Confession
For longtime Sister Wives viewers, the confession felt bittersweet. Meri and Janelle’s relationship has long been portrayed as distant and at times, tense. This was one of the first times Meri openly recognized Janelle’s kindness at the start.
Meri’s tone was softer and reflective, a side of her that has become more visible since separating from Kody. She seems more at peace now. Without the constant tension of plural marriage, she’s even ready to own her past mistakes.

Sister Wives: Fans Praise Meri’s Growth
Viewers filled the comment section with mixed feelings. They showed admiration and surprise, but also some frustration that it took Meri so long to speak up.
One fan wrote, “Meri should have told Janelle she appreciated her kindness long before. Instead, she made Janelle feel uncomfortable being around her. Glad she acknowledges how nice Janelle is because we see it too.”
Another commented, “Leaving Kody has freed Meri in so many ways. She can drop any defensiveness, caution or what’s deemed appropriate and just be herself.”
One viewer summed up the awkwardness perfectly: “From sister-in-law to sister wife is super odd. Anyone would have a lot of emotions around that.”
