Tyray Mollett’s introduction to 90 Day Fiancé fans wasn’t a happy one. On 2023’s season of Before the 90 Days, viewers watched the California native’s four-year online relationship with a woman he knew as Carmella fall apart when production discovered “she” was actually a man named Christian, who had taken thousands of dollars from Mollett under a fabricated romance.
Mollett, now 36, told PEOPLE the aftermath left him deeply guarded. “After the whole situation, I kind of was like, I don’t trust anyone. I have relationship issues, trust issues and all that,” he said. But he’s since found an unexpected silver lining. “It helped in a huge way.”
A Lifetime Of Carrying Extra Weight
The catfishing scandal became the push Mollett needed to address something he’d struggled with since childhood. “I kind of grew up a big boy. I gained weight at 7, 8 years old, and I just got bigger and bigger,” he explained, describing years of being on the receiving end of fat jokes from both kids and adults. By the time cameras started rolling for his TLC debut, Mollett weighed 418 pounds, with his weight swinging up and down by roughly 30 pounds over time.
He’d actually considered weight loss surgery back in 2019, but the potential side effects scared him off at the time. What finally changed his mind wasn’t the show. It was a moment with his mother.
“My mom was in the hospital, and I’m going to check on her, and I’m out of breath,” he recalled. “I’m like, wow, this isn’t good. I can’t take care of her and myself. So I told myself I have to make some changes.”
Surgery, Setbacks, And A Second Procedure
Mollett underwent gastric sleeve surgery in February 2025. The side effects he’d once feared did show up, including hair loss triggered by the physical shock of the procedure, which compounded a hairline problem he’d already been living with for years.
“My hair started thinning when I was 21, so I was really young, and the edges were coming out,” he said. By 25, his hairline had taken on a U-shape, and for nearly a decade, getting it back was something he genuinely wanted.
He initially looked into traveling to Turkey for a clinic specializing in Black hair, but ultimately found what he needed closer to home. In February, he underwent a hair transplant involving 2,500 grafts at Goals Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, later documenting the transformation on social media. The procedure took nearly 10 hours, with Mollett awake the entire time under local numbing. “The other hard part was that you’re basically laying on your stomach for four hours and then your back for four hours,” he said.
Feeling Like Himself Again
Six months after the transplant, Mollett is using a haircare routine. It includes minoxidil, tretinoin, and a special shampoo. His final results are still settling in. Even so, the shift in how he feels is already real.
“I feel a lot more confident and comfortable,” he said. “It has inspired me to put myself back out there,” he added, meaning he’s ready to date again. “I am looking to date now. I’m not so scared. I don’t feel like I’m a scary beast anymore.”
He’s not finished making changes either. Mollett is considering additional cosmetic work, including a procedure to address loose skin on his neck using cold plasma and helium gas, along with work on his chest and stomach. He’s also aiming to lose another 45 pounds.
Ready To Try Reality TV Again
Given how his first run on the franchise ended, it would be understandable if Mollett wanted nothing to do with cameras again. Instead, he’s open to it. “I love traveling, so I think that’d be a good experience to do it again, since last time I kind of got duped out of it,” he said. He’s also stayed connected to the community that watched him go through it, adding that other 90 Day Fiancé cast members have been encouraging him to put himself back out there.
Mollett’s willingness to try again, both in dating and with the franchise that shared his story, shows how much he has grown since 2023. The version of him that lost thousands and years of trust isn’t the same one now. He sits for interviews about a transformation he created for himself, on his own terms.
