Sister Wives: Janelle Brown Fires Back at Kody Over the “Backdoor Deal” Claim in the Season 21 Premiere

Sister Wives: Janelle Brown Fires Back at Kody Over the "Backdoor Deal" Claim in the Season 21 Premiere

Kody Brown is gone from Sister Wives, but his claims are not. In the Season 21 premiere on Sunday, October 4, Janelle Brown directly denied his story that she tried to cut Meri Brown out of the Coyote Pass sale. The premiere also showed Janelle and Meri sitting down to talk it through.

Janelle’s Side of the Dispute

Kody has said Janelle arranged a “backdoor deal” to sell the family’s Arizona land without Meri’s involvement. According to TODAY, Janelle said the apology tour Kody went on last season was meant to redeem himself. “He very publicly torpedoed my character afterwards,” she said. She followed that with a profane dismissal.

Janelle pointed to the timing. She said Kody started talking about the deal months after the sale closed. The property sold for $1.5 million in April 2025. She said she never tried to go behind anyone’s back. She also noted Kody said publicly that his lawyer told him he could sell the land without giving the others anything, since his name was on the title. In her view, the accusation felt personal, and the worst part was that people believed him.

Kody has not responded in these reports. At the Season 20 tell-all, he said he had received an offer and earnest money on the property. The premiere also showed footage of the apologies Kody made to Janelle, Christine, and Meri. Janelle said there has been no contact since.

Janelle and Meri Talk It Out

Janelle asked Meri to meet in person. She wanted to clear the air face to face. She told Meri that in her conversation with Kody, he talked about selling and holding some money back for Meri. She said he was making veiled threats about how much each of them was owed. She told Meri she did not want to give him that kind of power. She said she was not trying to cut her out.

Meri had her own doubts. She said she heard the plan was for Janelle and Kody to sell the land out from under her. She also said, “I don’t understand any of it,” according to Yahoo Entertainment. By the end, Meri told Janelle she appreciated her. The episode closed with Janelle, Meri, and Christine going through family photos together.

The three women also reacted to Kody and Robyn’s exit. Christine said she did not know how to process it. Meri said she was surprised. Janelle said she was shocked.

The Fight That Won’t Stay Closed

Kody left the show and still shaped the first episode. That is the most telling part. Coyote Pass sold more than a year ago, and the claim about it is still splitting two women who used to share a husband. Janelle and Meri reached a calm moment. They did not agree on everything, and Meri’s last word was confusion, not agreement. With Kody off camera and silent, viewers only hear one side of this argument for now.
